Making films responsibly means minimising environmental impact from day one. Here are 10 simple, practical sustainability ideas for film sets that benefit the crew, cast and environment without making production harder:

•  Ditch single-use plastic bottles — Use a reusable water bottle and provide clearly marked refill stations around set.

• Bring your own mug/keep cup — Encourage reusable cups for tea and coffee.

• Make catering more sustainable — Use reusable plates, cups and cutlery where possible.

• Reduce food waste — Order realistically, donate safe surplus food where possible, and have clearly labelled food-waste bins.

• Encourage car pooling — Coordinate shared transport to reduce journeys and costs.

• Switch off when not needed — Turn off lights, monitors, equipment etc when they're not being used.

• Reuse costumes and props — Hire, borrow, buy second-hand and reuse items wherever possible.

• Make recycling ridiculously easy — Put clearly labelled recycling, general waste and food-waste bins in convenient locations around base and set.

• Go digital — Use digital call sheets, scripts, sides and production paperwork where practical, while keeping essential printed copies available.

• Give the crew a greener set — Nominate a sustainability contact who can help everyone get involved without adding pressure.
